West Michigan’s Best Doctors

Perhaps you’ve noticed that there are fewer empty seats in your doctors’ waiting rooms.

According to a 2000 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey, Americans are visiting physicians more often, on average of three visits per year. As America’s population grows and ages, that number is likely to increase, as it has for the past decade.

The men and women who provide us with medical advice and care are playing bigger roles in our lives. Finding the best advice and the best care is a significant endeavor.


Here, Grand Rapids Magazine provides a list of the area’s best doctors, as established by the Best Doctors in America database. Best Doctors Inc. (www.bestdoctors.com) conducts an annual peer review survey to determine the “best,” in which renowned doctors are asked, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” Doctors and hospitals are not allowed to pay a fee to be listed, nor does Best Doctors pay physicians to participate in the survey process. This ensures that the database remains an unbiased source. The recommended doctors are screened for licensing and certification requirements and for any disqualifying disciplinary actions. West Michigan’s best doctors are part of a select group. Best Doctors names only 30,000 doctors in the United States — about 4 percent of all U.S. doctors — as the best. In October 2003, Grand Rapids Magazine will again honor members of the medical community via the Grand Rapids Magazine Medical Hall of Fame. This event and complementary publication are meant to serve the Greater Grand Rapids area in providing recognition of individuals who have made tremendous contributions to this — and the worldwide — community.
